The Matter smart home standard is expected to be released in the first half of 2022, and silicon for this new technology ecosystem will be showcased at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas on 5-8 January 2022. One such product is Infineon’s AIROC CYW30739, a multiprotocol system-on-chip (SoC) that combines Bluetooth LE with 802.15.4 low-power connectivity standard.
Here, it’s worth noting that Wi-Fi will be the primary transport layer for Matter smart home technology. At the same time, BLE will serve as a commissioning and provisioning tool, while 802.15.4 will connect multiple devices over a mesh network in low-power mode.
Amid multiple radios operating in smart home environments, RF circuits in complementary wireless technologies like BLE and 802.15.4 must provide robust connectivity. The BLE radio in the CYW30739 chip boasts -95.5 dBm Rx sensitivity while it amounts to -103.5 dBm for the 802.15.4 radio.
Next, CYW30739 integrates a 96-MHz Arm Cortex-M4 microcontroller with a floating-point unit to deliver high-performance computing, and it has a lot of memory—flash, RAM, and ROM—to support feature-rich applications.
According to Sonal Chandrasekharan, VP of the Bluetooth product line at Infineon Technologies, Matter is at a late stage of development. “Even today, multiple silicon vendors and system houses are releasing applications, which are available through Matter GitHub.”
Infineon has recently expanded its role with the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) by joining the Alliance’s Board of Directors as a Promoter Member. CSA, formerly Zigbee Alliance, is the driving force behind Matter smart home technology.
During the Coronavirus pandemic, houses became much more than houses; they became a virtual office, and even a virtual meeting point as people brought additional appliances and automation tools in their houses to make them smarter. As Matter enters the commercial realm, the pandemic is still a major influence on the home turning into a workplace.
How will this turn out for smart home technologies like Matter? The year 2022 will likely decide that.
